Crew of SS Hung On 1929

Tue, 02/17/2015 - 01:25

The captain of ss Hung On was my grandfather A.A.Laihovetsky, whose daughter Zena was the first non-British child admitted to CBS when Sir Reginald Stubbs was Governor, as a stateless ex-Russian.

The comments following detail the ship's owners name in 1929, and the ship's origins.

Captain Laihovetsky was also associated in some way with ss K'ung Fu-tzu (Confucius), where he received a medal in 1925 whose characters translate as "Extinguish a Fire Award".

A.A. Laihovetsky, died from TB at the French Hospital  in 1942.

With the additional details I have now been given through Gwulo.com, I have been able to piece together more from my mother's photo album in relation to ss Hung On, as follows -

  • ss Hung On was built in 1889 at Short Bros, Sunderland.
  • Lee-Ching s.s. Co. of Macau were the 6th owner. Its earlier names included Dashtestan, Coloane, and Tai Tak, but none of these may have been its original name.
  • It was wrecked in the Hainan Strait  5/9/1929, the same year as the crew photo shown above was taken.
    • Apparently Captain Laihovetsky's family were on board for this voyage (school holidays?), including my mother Alvena aged 11 who took these photos:

    • It is doubtful if my grandfather got a medal for this effort ! However he continued to captain ships out of HK for the remainder of his life, so it didn't seem to have been held against him.
