This photo shows some of the damage suffered by Ho Tung Gardens during the 1941 Japanese invasion. Most obviously, in the corner nearest to the photographer, the first floor wall is largely missing. Lady Ho Tung's daughter described how the bombing had left her late mothers bedroom  looking "like an open verandah" (http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/ce/Museum/Monument/form/briefing/htgaa_report.pdf) and may well have been referring to this part of the mansion.

For an account of the wartime events at Ho Tung Gardens see "Resist to the End" by Charles Banham who took over the property on behalf of the British military on 9th December 1941 and was present when much of the damage was inflicted.
