The Italian Convent

Has anybody got information regarding the Italian Convent on Caine Road?

As I understand it there were at least two establishments under the same roof run by the nuns.

One was a school for young ladies and one was a orphanage or care home. I think there may also have been a refuge for homeless women and their families.

I am interested in the period from about 1885 to 1906 and wonder if anybody knows of records or has suggestions.

I believe the current school would be this one despite they have moved.  The About SHCC section should have something that you might be interested in.

The primary school and the business school seemed to be in the original location in new buildings.

My query is nothing to do with Elizabeth Moore. My grandmother was named Annie Louisa Moore Burke, Family memory says she was educated at The Italian Convent on Caine Road. Her father was a James Moore but he died when she was young leaving her mother, Maria Aloysia Fitzgerald a widow with three young children, She then married Edward Burke who was a timekeeper at the Taikoo Sugar Refinery. They married at St Joseph's Church, Kowloon. Hence the Moor Burke.

The Elizabeth Moore you refer to is no link as far as I know. Just a coincidence. 

My interest in the Italian Convent is to see when and under what circumstances my grandmother - and I presume her sister Clara - were educated at the establishment. I understand it was both  an educational establishment and an orphanage/refuge but could of course have that all wrong.

Some years ago I got in touch with the Cannosian order that run the present place but got no help and was told there were no records.

Finally, it is likely my grandmother was there as my grandfather lived at 33 Caine Road at the time and that may be how they first met. Her picture - possibly in her wedding dress is on my website,
