The rough weather continues. This will no doubt delay us and we may not reach Rio by Saturday.

I called on Mrs. Thode this a.m. She just doesn’t get up during these rough days.

Rev. Klein simply stays on deck.

Rained but nice during the afternoon.

Went for swim.

Much local news. Chinese forces coming down from Canton. Kowloon partly evacuated  & Jap troops at Castle Peak awaiting transport. Our Prisoners of War now in HK. Kowloon bombed. General outlook seems to be OK.

News came in today, and discounted, that the troops, and/or folk at St Theresa's Hospital Kowloon had been sent over to Hong Kong.  Kowloon said to have been bombed, and that public hadn't been allowed to go to Kowloon on Monday because Japs said there was bombing.

First rain for about 2 months.

Paper says Prof. Robertson, who has been working in  Bacteriological Institute in city all along, has died.

M. L. Bevan's diary entry:

Bailey and Cole moved to Bungalow E. Mason died.

Cole is presumably A. L. Cole of the Colonial Secretary's Office, and Bailey is probably C. T. Bailey, who served under Bevan (Deputy Director of ARP) as an Air Raid Precautions Training Officer.

Walter’s birthday. I wonder where he might be.

The weather is finally getting better and better and calmer. This evening Mrs. Ziegler and Rev. Thode had a visit and beer with us.

There are many toys and plenty youngsters there. We were told there are 150 below 13 years of age.

14 people left camp (incl. Mrs. Proulx, 2 Proulxs ((her two sons Michael and Roger)), Gosling, Kynoch, Manning ((probably refers to E Manning.

Fine day.

Went for swim.

No news. (Later. German advance in Russia stopped. Chemical bombs being dropped with devastating effect by us. A three pronged drive being made by us via Thailand, Burma & China)

Several people who have proved self-support left the Camp.

Tiger marks opposite hospital path!

This morning a large gray ship came rushing across the sea, and a launch followed it, tooting loudly and continuously.

Mabel and I and Mrs K went swimming in morning.  The ginger we got in the parcel is absolutely delicious.

This evening we saw a good movie about a pastor’s family in Iowa.

Tiger footprints on pathway to hospital

Some shipping arrived today (Are they being allowed to enter but not to leave?)

Fine.

Kein neues. (('No news'. Jones has been studying German, and starts writing diary entries in German. We'll use Google Translate to try and make sense of them.))

Selwyn-Clarke came in, and brought false teeth, which aren't Mum's. ((Just before the Jap attack, Dr Chawn in town was making a denture for Mum, so in camp she asked if there was any chance of getting it.  In retrospect, what a fantastic person Selwyn-Clarke was to take time, under difficult circumstances i.e. the Japs, to try to ferret out someone's denture!))

Wonderful news - all the VADs are due here on Monday, so glad for Mabel's sake.

Former policeman Jim Shepherd must have been one of the last to receive his 'seventy five dollar parcel'. An invoice with today's date, made up by the Department store Habade, shows that he was soon to receive a package that would include soap (laundry and toilet), brown sugar, size 9 rubber shoes, chocolate, toothpaste, currants, needle and thread, honey and even gruyere cheese.

The weather is getting warmer every day, also it’s very calm. The sunset was beautiful.

There was a concert this evening, given by “Asama” passengers. It was very good. One of the world’s best piano players played several pieces. Also special songs by the Brazilian folks.

Nice day.

No news.

Grindley & Excell finished in kitchen.

Mohandas Karamchand Ghandi launches the 'Quit India' movement.

Soon after the surrender of Hong Kong, the Japanese began a campaign to try to win over their Indian POWs and of the Colony's Indian communities. They attempted to recruit soldiers to the pro-Japanese Indian National Army and they set up the Indian Independence League to provide civilian support for that Army and for Japanese agitation against British rule.

'Amateur Nite' concert.  Gimson made good speech at the end. Danny Wilson (Peggy's husband) amazingly good in impressions.  People lying back on the grass in the darkness, smoking.  Lightning sometimes.  Hottest day we've had.
