Les Fisher in Shamshsuipo:

We are all feeling weak and 'gutsless' (sic). I cannot even show any interest in the fact that Labour has got in at the election and by an overwhelming majority. It would seem that something has taken place about which we know nothing, beats me. When the belly is empty concentration is not possible.

This has been an exciting week. On Wednesday 25th at noon a large plane passed over St Stephens and dropped a large parcel of bombs or depth charges or what have you. I heard the plane and rushed out to the veranda but on looking up to see I was blinded by the sun and then suddenly there was a terrific Swish as if bombs were falling, actually one went through' the roof of Block 8 and landed on Henderson, Keen and Goodwins room but didn't go off.

Alert in forenoon. One high flyer. First alarm in many weeks.

We had a bit of excitement on Wednesday last, 25th.  We were mostly in our blocks at midday when we heard the drone of an aeroplane. It sounded at a low altitude and had the somewhat uneven and tinny sound of a Japanese made or tuned engine. It was coming from West to East and we went onto our balcony to see it when it had passed over our blocks. (We face East). As the drone grew louder we suddenly heard a distinct swishing and whistling noise which I took to be the shrieking of the wind in the fuselage and the propeller which you hear when a plane passes close overhead.

On this day, the British mini-submarine XE-4 and its five-man crew cut the undersea communications cables connecting Singapore to Saigon, and Saigon to Hong Kong. This forced the Japanese to communicate via radio, which was easier for the Allies to intercept.

Adam Bergius was one of the divers who did the actual cutting. This extract from his obituary in the the Scottish Sunday Herald explains:
