Strong rumour (which Clifton swears true) that Russia declared war on Japan and we have landed on Japan proper!

Outside roll call, then news that technicians (previously interviewed) were to go off today - no one knows where,they had to be ready to leave by 2pm.

Technicians' families allowed to go with them. But the Seraphinas and Wards were not allowed because too many children. About 199 went, including (people I knew):

100 & some technicians with their families left Camp to work in HK 2.30pm. Rice, oil & Y50 supplied? Left Pier around 10pm.

Russia invaded Manchuria with 3 armies yesterday.

A & B groups for bran ¼ lb Y8.50. ∴


Up early and went to Bartons' room (American Block) where Sheila and Pat were married. Father Meyer took the ceremony, which was followed by a Nuptial Mass. Mr. J. Joyce was Best Man. Quentin Macfayden gave Sheila away. Pat looked nervous, Sheila most serene in her dark blue taffeta dress.


Patrick Cullinan of the Hong Kong Police Department marries Sheila Haynes of Perth.

The camp is just buzzing, literally humming with speculation! Yesterday morning we had our usual Friday roll call and afterwards I went along to our distant garden near the cemetery. On my way back at about 11 o’clock I found that everyone seemed to be very excited about something and I soon discovered that the Japs had ordered about 100 technicians amongst the internees, together with their wives and families (if they had any) to pack all their goods and chattels and be ready to go to the Prep School pier at 2.30 that afternoon to embark for an undisclosed destination!


Some aerial activity early am. Cool, overcast, SE wind. Fine pm.

Outside roll-call 8am.

(Guesses re reason for yesterday’s move of technicians. Repatriation, hostages, to take over all HK works from Japs in prep. for Wang Ching Wei-ites when they take charge of Colony & going to Formosa or Japan) 

Chopped wood for G till 9am.

Finished Hosp. chatty.

60 drops Shark’s liver oil issued & 1.03 oz tea & .9 oz sugar. C & D groups for bran.[105 ?]

Lorry with meat & veg 8pm.

To town with two kids. Very quiet. All sorts foolish rumours. Leaflets said to be dropped saying transfer to take place Tuesday. Zindel ((International Red Cross Rep)) said to have told Rosary Hillites not celebrate until Tuesday.

2 meat meals today. Lots of rumours re war being over & of more people to go to HK this week. Med. Sanitary Dept. & some Police. People who went Frid. now in Precious Blood Hosp. All banks & gold shops shut in town & no more transactions can take place between Internees & Formosans. Gear returned, gold, watch-works etc. All Camp very happy at the moment. ∴x


Still not well.
