Stag Hotel [????-????]

Submitted by annelisec on Mon, 10/04/2010 - 08:31

Copied from http://gwulo.com/node/7242

Actually the Stag Hotel crops up a few times in my book (pages 44, 55, 76 and 91).

The owner from 1878 was Jesse Cook, who took it over from old Soldier John Robinson White, a veteran of the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny, who went bankrupt that year. Cook renovated it and raised a family there through the 1880s, when it became a popular venue for international billiards tournaments.

If you know the nationality of this gentleman, please could you leave a comment below?

He appears as in the history of John Olson. They must have been good friends, as Petersen was appointed as executor of Olson's will.

Historian Carl T Smith wrote about Petersen in his article "The German speaking community in Hong Kong 1846-1918". The first mention of Petersen is in the section "Taverns, Boarding Houses, Cafes and Hotels":

National Tavern [????-????]

This is linked to the John Olson story - he was the publican of this Tavern for many years.

Initial discussions of its location placed it much further west, based on an address given as "292, Queen's Road West". Today, that address is for a building on the corner of Centre Street and Queen's Road West in Sai Ying Pun.

But in fact the tavern was back in Sheung Wan. We can confirm that from the mentions of the Tavern in the newspaper reports of Annual Licensing sessions:

Charles Edward WARREN [1872-1923]

Charles Edward Warren was John Olson's son-in-law.

To start, a search for 'warren' in HKGRO returns several entries. I only skimmed a couple of the results, but found the duration of his employment with the Public Works Department:

This story covers rags-to-riches, mixed-marriage, family intrigues - and it's all true!

We first heard about it when Sean Olson wrote to us from Ireland, asking for help finding information about his great-grandfather, John Olson. John arrived in Hong Kong from Sweden around 1860, and lived here until his death in 1918. He started with nothing, but apparently had a measure of business success. Which was a good thing as he had seven children by two different Chinese women to support.
