The highest point in Route 12 and still part fo Wilson Trail stage 8.
This is one of the main buildings of interest in Tai Po Tau. It was built by the Tang clan to commemorate its tenth generation ancestor 'Tang King Law'.
The hall was once used as a study hall and was declared a monument in 1998. Recently, it was recognised with an Award of Merit of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2001 Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.
This location isn't mentioned in the book (as far as I can tell) but anyone who follows the route will walk past it and it is worth stopping to have a look.
Tai Po Tau village is reached via a subway under the East Rail track and the entrance to the village is key point 4 on the route information.
This is the river crossing described by the author for Route 12 and is marked on the route as Key Point 3. The photo in the book shows a development called "Parc Versailles" in the background.
The route joins the Wilson Trail stage 8 on the northern side of the river next to Shui Wai village.
Kam Wo Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Lam Tsuen river, connecting Kam Shek New Village with Tai Wo Govt Housing Estate. It will be familiar to those who have completed the Wilson Trail because it is the stage 8 crossing used or the trail.
Hong Kong Railway Museum is located in the old Tai Po Market Train station, built in 1913.
The museum is marked as Key Point 2 on the route info.
Also known as the the Old Tai Po Police Station. The Govt's development website reads:
"The old Police Station is a single-storey building constructed in 1899 shortly after the British leased the New Territories. It was the first police station and Police Headquarters in the New Territories and was rated by the Antiquities Advisory Board as a Grade II historical building. The Government is now considering different options for the adaptive re-use of the building."
Kiu Tau is village lying roughly half way between Tai Po and Fanling. It is the end point for both Route 12 and Route 13 - HK Mainland Defence Ruins.
This marks the start of Route 12 - HK Mainland Defence Ruins.
It is a declared monument and currently houses the NT East District Scout HQ.
To get here you can take the East Rail line to Tai Po Market Station. Exit the station towards Tai Po Market and take the subway that leads under the railway track to Wan Tau Kok Sitting Out Area. On the other side of this recreation ground (past the tennis and football courts) is Wan Tau Kok Lane. Turn right and walk up the hill. The Office building is at the very top of the hill.
This private building in Tai Po is a bit of an enigma. Built in 1955 it is situated on the main thoroughfare in the old part of town, Kwong Fuk Road. It has a large amount of private land, part courtyard part garden behind its imposing walls, which is quite uncommon for private buildings
If anybody can shed some light on its ownership or history it would be interesting to hear. I have been past on the bus a couple of times and on one occasion saw some uniformed children playing there, so perhaps it is now a private school or hostel or some sort of childrens home?
