This brief history from the HK Public Library (HKPL):
Located on Mount Austin Road, the Peak, it was built in about 1890 and had offered its customers ''a separate Bath-Room.in every Bed-Room''-a rare convenience at that time. The venture was unsuccessful, and in 1897 the Hotel was sold to the Military Authorities and used as barracks for troops. The Hotel was destroyed during the 2nd World War and never rebuilt.
Early maps show the main building as a 'Military Hospital', then on later maps it is described as 'Wellington Barracks'. I believe it took its name from the Wellington Battery, which was built on the shoreline just to the North of this site.
1927. A camp for soldiers is built here on the recently reclaimed land. (See PWD report for 1927, quoted in the comments below.)
1941. 'C' Force (the Canadian troops) arrive in Hong Kong, and initially stay here.
1942-45. Used by the Japanese as a Prisoner of War camp to hold Allied soldiers.
