Police Officer in Hong Kong in the 1950's and 1960's.

Percy LOWE [1912-1975]

Submitted by Freya Y Gwyn on Mon, 06/22/2015 - 15:03

He was my father.  My name was formerly Freda Lowe, daughter of Percy and Ena Muriel (Peggy) Lowe.

My father was born in 1912, and died in 1975, aged 63. My mother died in 1990.

He served in the HKP from just after the war in 1945, until he retired in 1966.

I would be happy for anyone who knew him, or any of our family, to contact me through this website :)

Updated DoB from comment below.

HONG KONG POLICE MAGAZINE

Submitted by Richard Muirhead on Thu, 06/04/2015 - 22:08

I was at the British Library in London in late May `15 looking through their collection of the Hong Kong Police Magazine from the early 1950s to 1970. It provided a fascinating and often humourous glimpse into colonial  policing during that era. It was also bi-lingual but I cannot read Chinese. I was actually looking for unusual fauna-related stories and I wasn`t disappointed, I found an account of a Chinese Giant Salamander which I vaguely have a memory of seeing before but it was good to see again.

Christopher Stanley PILE [c.1909-????]

I've set the DoB based on 1314's comment below. It replaces the 1912 date given in John Black's list, which gives Pile's occupation in 1941 as "police".

Arsenal House (East wing) [1990- ]

Submitted by David on Tue, 04/28/2015 - 16:36

Completion date taken from pg.98 of "Asia's Finest Marches On", which also says:

Later development saw construction of the six-floor Arsenal House, which features huge lifts that can carry fully laden lorries to the specially designed rooftop, larger than a football field, where drill practices and bomb disposal exercises can be held.

New May House [1973-2000]

Submitted by David on Tue, 04/28/2015 - 15:58

Completed in November 1973, according to Offbeat:

New May House was built from 1971 to 1973 to replace the then May House in Gloucester Road which was more famous for its curries than as a police building. The new May House became fully operational in November 1973 after a plaque-unveiling and opening ceremony, at which Princess Alexandra and then Commissioner of Police Charles Sutcliffe officiated.
