Built on the hill behind the Taikoo Sugar Refinery as European Staff Quarters. The two-storey building appears first on this photo from 1895 (labeled: New bungalow, club (left) and servants' quarters). It was named (later?) Taikoo Terrace mentioned in the PWR for 1923 (item 120a) and here.
To improve the road connection between Causeway Bay and Shaukiwan, the Hong Kong Government decided to widen the existing road. The Public Works Report (PWR) for 1921 refers:
As early as 1912 the necessity for this work became apparent, and negotiations were begun with Messrs. Butterfield & Swire for the surrender of certain areas and houses to enable the project to be carried on; but it was only in September, 1920, that an agreement with them was reached.
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the hat worn by the gentleman on the left in the photo below. This photo is a crop from a larger image of the Taikoo Cable Car from the sugar refinery up to the Sanitarium (sic) between Mount Butler and Mount Parker. We're wondering if it is some form of sartorial addition to further improve the protective qualities of the pith helmet? Has anyone seen anything similar?
