Amelia Florence SMITH (née WILLIS) [1879-1956]
Amelia Florence Smith was the wife of Octavius Arthur Smith, also in the camp. They were married in Mhow, Bengal, India on 30 December 1901. They lived in Adelaide, Australia and had 2 daughters, Amy Mursel & Bertha Mabel. The daughters were still in Australia during the war.
Amelia Florence Smith is my Great Aunt. She sent a Red Cross postcard (which I have) to her sister, my Grandmother, dated 15 November 1944. It says:-
"Dear Mabel. Both well. Still hoping early reunion. Heard from Australia dated 1943."
Sarah CASTLE (née STALEY, aka Sally) [1891-c.1975]
Sally Castle was my great aunt by birth. She was an internee at Stanley Civilian Prison Camp during the Second World War. Following the war, she returned to her home in Vancouver, Canada.
I am writing a creative non-fiction book about Sally and her husband Gordon Castle, focusing upon their experiences at Stanley.
Any help is gratefully appreciated.
William MACFARLANE [????-1966]
William Macfarlane, my grandfather, travelled from Glasgow to Shanghai by train in the early 20th century. Family tradition has it that he then worked on the refrigerated freight boats going up the Yangste and lived in Shanghai, he was a triple certificated tradesman from the Clydeside (marine fitting, bolier-making and refrigeration mechanics). He finally moved to Hong Kong and ended as the chief Engineering Superintendent of the Hong Kong Dairy Farm & Ice Cold Storage before retiring to Sydney in the mid 1960s.
