Son of Charles Herbert Whiteley Ah Kew and Helena Madar born abt 1905 Hong Kong. Married in 1929 Honk Kong to Grace Chum Oi Tye born 14 Jan 1906 in Carlton, Victoria. Charles remained in Hong Kong. At the start of the war he sent his Australian born wife Grace  and his two Hong Kong born sons to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. About 1970, he returned to Victoria, Australia with his second wife Ellen Roskilly, British born Nurse. They set up house in a  wealthy area of Camberwell, but did not remain. I woujld like to know what happened to Henry Whiteley Kew.

He is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Happy Valley. His gravestone has the inscription:

George Harold Thomas was born on 2 January, 1889 in Hong Kong, of unknown parents. He was adopted as a child but left to fend for himself after a few years. His early life was lonely and hard due to poverty and privation. He was educated at the Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong and the College of Medicine there, graduating MB BS in 1914. He joined the Government Service when he graduated, retiring after 37 years and rejoining for a further 22 years.

She died on 5th July 1926. The inscription on her gravestone reads:

My Father, a Ship's Engineer, was on the 'SS Sunning' out of Hong Kong, when she was pirated, also In 1926, after leaving Shanghai; sailing as 3rd Engineer. Much was written about this in the South China Morning Post, where a Ben Wylie, (his younger brothers future Father-in-Law) was (or was later to become) the General Manager of the South China Morning Post (referred to by Phil Cracknell in a Contributions on your Gwulo site) 

My Daughter and I recently visited the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley to place flowers and a photograph of my late wife at her fathers grave. It must be about 12 yrs since my late wife and I visited but it was the first time for my daughter. My father in law Michael Francis O'Sullivan was buried there in 1960. He died in St Matildas Hospital. During the war he was on the North Atlantic convoys. In later years he sailed as a Captain ( I believe ) with I think the Hong Kong and Shanghai Shipping Company. When on shore he would stay at the Merchant Navy Officers club.
