Xavier House, set on a hill overlooking the sea, is an Ignatian (Catholic) spirituality retreat centre, address 27 Peak Road, Cheung Chau, Hong Kong.
In the 1950s, Irish Jesuit missionaries came to Cheung Chau and purchased the former family house, redeveloping it as a school, a base for language study and training. Fr Jeremiah McCarthy was the first Superior. It was called Xavier House Language School.
In 1979, its mission shifted: Xavier House became a full‑time sanctuary dedicated to silent prayer, individual spiritual direction, and the classic 30‑day Ignatian retreat.
Today, it is the Xavier House Ignatian Spirituality Centre. It continues to offer retreats and formation programs. It remains a peaceful hilltop oasis with fine views in all directions over the island and the sea, hosting regional assemblies and specialized activities for the wider community. It offers accommodation for up to 60 occupants, with 6 activity and chat rooms.
This is the comment of a church minister who visited Xavier House: ‘I was blessed and quickened by the meditations and God spoke to me through the Bible passages we were given. We began on Tuesday night and ended on Saturday evening with a thank you dinner. I left the retreat refreshed and recharged. My faith has been quickened and I am very blessed and very thankful that the church I serve supports such retreats for pastors.’
