The local population of Cheung Chau has traditionally been seagoing, so there are several sites on the island dedicated to the sea goddess Tin Hau, who was believed to safeguard fishermen and sailors.
The temple at Nam Tam Wan is one of two main temples on Cheung Chau dedicated to Tin Hau. Modest in size yet well cared for, the temple features classic traditional architecture, including an altar for burning joss sticks and a pavilions fronting the temple. Inside, visitors will encounter the expected shrine housing the deity, alongside historic items such as an ancient bell and drum. There's also a beautifully preserved sedan chair displayed in one of the side rooms.
This is a fine example of a local temple.
The other main Tin Hau Temple is on Chung Hing Street.
Two other Tin Hau buildings are the Sai Wan and Chung Hing Street temples.
