Born in 1912, Jill Doggett was a well-known Hong Kong journalist and champion for social justice who worked for the South China Morning Post from 1953 to 1974.
She came to Hong Kong from Somerset in 1953 with her husband Major Gerald Doggett and their children Anthony and Lucy. Major Doggett was second in command of the Hong Kong regiment and came to help train servicemen for Korea. In 1974 he was awarded an MBE.
Despite having no journalistic experience, Jill Doggett became a court reporter and for five years covered the Supreme Court and tenancy tribunal.
She covered social welfare issues in Hong Kong when no one else was doing it. Her column, Out and About with Jill Doggett, ran three times a week in the Post for nearly 15 years. She was always full of anecdotes about her years in a colony undergoing huge change.
She wrote feature stories, including a series in 1963 on outstanding women in Hong Kong.
In 1974 she and her husband retired and returned to Britain.
She passed away aged 87 in 1999.
