Broadwood Road came into being in 1915.  Because of their raised elevation, enjoying cooling breezes and pleasing views,  these houses were built with the wealthy in mind in 1915-16 by C E Warren and Co Ltd.  They were either simple bungalows or more elaborate two-storey properties built in elegant colonial style.  Architect Charles Warren liked the ridge development enough to own two properties himself later on.  Number 20 was the finest on the ridge.

Number 11 Broadwood Road was a bungalow.  It was a four roomed house with kitchen, two bathrooms and servants' quarters.

These houses were constructed from locally cut granite blocks and concrete, with timber rafters. They were painted white, and would have gleamed brightly when newly painted.  The granite walls would have kept temperatures cooler in summer and provided sturdy security in the typhoon season.

Occupants lived extremely comfortable lifestyles, with the services of  an amah and a cook.  For many years access anywhere would have been by rickshaw.  Even when cars became more numerous, Broadwood Road was just a single track road, certainly up to the 1960s.

Being built on a ridge, the house had fine views all around but particularly to the front and rear of the house (Happy Valley/the Peak and So Kon Po Valley/ Jardine's Lookout/ Mount Butler).

Today 11 Broadwood Road no longer exists.  The two towers of the Villa Rocha have taken its place, possibly Block B.

More can be found on the first Broadwood Road owners here.

At some point Number 11 was upgraded from its colonial bungalow original to this two-storey building (1956).  There is an  'Add connection' for the 1916 build but nothing for this newer building.  Do we have a date that it was enlarged so we can make a connection tag?  I have a 1953 shot with the new look.
