Broadwood Road came into being in 1915.  It was a development of colonial-style houses, either bungalows or two-storey, on a ridge overlooking the Happy Valley Racecourse.

Number 11 was a bungalow.  The bungalows typically had four rooms with kitchen, two bathrooms and servants' quarters at the rear.

Bungalows #11 and #12 were built to the front of the ridge to take full advantage of the views.

At some point Number 11 was upgraded from its colonial bungalow original to this two-storey building (1956).  There is an  'Add connection' for the 1916 build but nothing for this newer building.  Do we have a date that it was enlarged so we can make a connection tag?  I have a 1953 shot with the new look.

As the first owner of number 11 Broadwood Road, Sir Ellis Kadoorie, like others on the Broadwood ridge, was very keen on horse-racing and prominent on the HK racing scene with his own stable of horses.

He and his brother Sir Elly (Eleazar) Kadoorie had both made fortunes in Hong Kong and the far east, achieving success in banking, rubber plantations, electric power utilities and real estate, with a major share-holding in Hong Kong Hotels Limited.  They were well-known as philanthropists and were both knighted, Sir Ellis in 1917.

Sir Ellis died very suddenly from a heart attack in 1922 at the age of 57.
