In 1922 the government started building a new four-story office building for the PWD, with a lift, to accommodate the Buildings Ordinance Office, Survey Office, Water Works Office and Accounts) (1922 PWDAR, para 90), likely immediately in front of the CSO. PWD probably moved into the building in 1923 when the utilities were ready (1923 PWDAR, paras 50, 104, 118, 132).

The building suffered considerable damage during the war, rendering it unusable (‘destroyed by enemy action’ [1946 PWDAR para 32]).

Comments

The buildings survived mostly intact during the war & appear standing in photos just after the liberation - they do look like they have been stripped down to a shell. They do not appear in Hedda Morrison photos post war so I assume they were demolished late 1945/early 1946
