Raymond Tyson Moyer was a missionary, teacher and agricultural expert. After his graduation from Oberlin College in 1921, he was sent to their mission school, Ming Hsien Christian School in Taigu, Shanxi. At Ming Hsien, Moyer later headed their agricultural department and established a programme aimed at improving the farming methods of rural Shanxi province.
He received his Ph.D. in agronomy from Cornell University in 1941 and had intended to return to China. Dr. Moyer became trapped in Hong Kong during the Japanese invasion and was later interned at Stanley Camp. In 1942, he was repatriated with other Americans to the United States.
Upon his return, he joined the Department of Agriculture in the United States government. In September 1945, he left by air for China on loan for six months to help in reconstruction.
His personal papers are held at Oberlin College.
