Stephen was the fifth son of Amaro John and Maria Rita Reed, born in 1910. Stephen attended Hong Kong University where he studied Arts and was very prominent in the Hostel and University.  He was a football "Green", captain of the University soccer team, and member of the 1st XI in cricket and hockey.  In Ricci Hall he served as treasurer, secretary and chairman. Stephen headed a department at the Hong Kong General Post Office where his father Amaro worked before he retired in 1927.  After being wounded at the southern side of Jardine's Lookout on December 19, 1941, he was taken by his brother Reggie to a sheltered aid station before being transported to the Military Hospital on Bowen Road where he died from his wounds on January 15, 1942 at the age of 32.  Stephen, along with his brother Francis, is buried at the Stanley Military Cemetery.
