If she was appointed O.B.E. for her services as a Wren during WW2, then my guess is that she was performing some serious "secret squirrel" activity.
Far more than just run-of-the-mill telephonist duties, I would suggest. Was she at Bletchley operating the you know what, I wonder? (Although I note from elsewhere that she spent part of the war in Inverness, Scotland).

Thank you Peter. Upon re-reading annpake's post I note that Helen's appointment to the O.B.E. appeared in the Gazette in 1919.
As you correctly point out, nothing to do with WW2! Obviously services during WW1.
