I am a legal historian who is interested in the relationships between British colonial property law and Chinese nationalism. I began my archival work on this topic in 2008-10 when I was a CityU of HK visiting professor in the School of Law teaching trusts and common law method. The role of Jacks as Land Officer in Hong Kong (1905-1935) fascinated me so much that it formed two chapters of my PhD thesis. From this beginning, I did further archival, newspaper and travel records research to produce Going Native: The Passions of Philip Jacks (Melbourne: Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2016).

A brief biography of Mr Philip Jacks (1877-1941):

  • Hong Kong Assistant Land Officer (1905-1916)
  • Land Officer (1916-1935)
  • Called to the Bar, Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London (1922)
  • Acting Puisne Judge, Supreme Court (1927, 1928)
  • Lay Member of the Church Body of St Johns Cathedral (1928-1935)
  • Drafted Digest of Instructions from the Secretary of State for the Colonies (with Local Rulings) Regarding Disposal and Tenure of Land in the Colony of Hong Kong (1930)
  • Acting Crown Solicitor (1930)
  • Registrar of Marriages (1931-1935)
  • Additional Judge of Criminal Appeal, Supreme Court (1933)
  • Recipient, King's Silver Jubilee Medal for Services to Empire (1935)

Apologies for the red herring. I had seen the company name spelt both with and without an 's'. I wasn't sure which was correct.
