Gallery for typhoon photos?

David, would it be possible to create a gallery for photos taken in the aftermath of the various Hong Kong typhoons in consecutive date order? I uploaded one of the damage to the Bungalow at 19 Broadwood Road where my family lived, but it took me a while to verify that the date was 1930. I have a couple more of the collapsed wall between the Bungalow and The Towers at that date. Typhoons obviously upset daily life. When my uncle Leslie Warren brought his new wife, Cicely, to Hong Kong in May 1923, they first had to deal with the death of Charles Warren in June and all the ensuing complications, and then the typhoon of August 1923, which must have hit The Ridge with quite a blast. In Cicely's place, I'm not sure that I wouldn't have packed my bags and gone home. For me, at least, it would be helpful to see a chronological sequence of dated photos of the worst typhoons in order to get an idea of what the various members of my family had to contend with and when, during the eighty odd years that they spent in Hong Kong.

Hi Jill,

The galleries usually group photos by owner and decade. I don't want to change that, but tags can help.

Tags are a great way to identify common subjects across different pages on the site. eg here's a list of all the photos that have been tagged typhoon:

If you add any new photos that show typhoon damage, just remember to give them the tag typhoon and they'll automatically be added to that list.

David, thank you for the magic link to put all the typhoon photos into date order. Can you reveal how to operate that trick with other tags? If Gwulo is anything to go by, certain typhoons seem to have generated more photos than others. Top of the list here are 1923 (18); 1906 (17); 1937 (8); 1874 (7). Other typhoons don't seem to have been so 'photogenic'. There's a big gap between 1906 and 1923. I'm sure most camera owning ex-Hong Kong dwellers must have at least one post-typhoon photo tucked away in their family albums.

To see how this works, take a look at the page for Victoria Hospital we were talking about recently: http://gwulo.com/node/4031

You'll see it has the tag hospital.

Click on the tag and you'll go to the page:

Everything tagged "hospital"

So that shows all the pages (photos, place, forum topics, etc) on Gwulo that have been tagged hospital.

Click the "Photos" button beneath the title and you'll switch to a page listing just the photos tagged hospital, shown as thumbnails in date order:

Photos tagged "hospital"

You can follow these same steps for any tag on Gwulo. One I often use is:

Photos tagged "aerial photo"
