We passed through this abandoned village on the recent walk with Guy, http://gwulo.com/node/22242

Guy asked if anyone knew why everyone had moved out from these villages. Was it just inconvenience that made people move, or were they relocated by the government? Relocation was suggested because there is a "Mau Ping New Village" over the hill towards Sai Kung:

Any ideas?

When BAAG Founder Lindsay Ride escaped with D.W. Morley and D.F. Davis from Shamshuipo PW Camp, with the help of Franics Lee on 11th Jan 1942, they went up the Kolwoon Hills, down to Siu Lek Yuan & up to Ma On Shan towards Sai Kung.  They encountered friendly villagers the first time at Mau Ping, who provided them with a meal. They continued their escape entering & extricating from Saikung Town, eventually, got help from the Red Guerrillas (the Kong Kau Independent Brigade) which had just moved into the area, and with their help, made good their way by junk to to Dapeng Bay and Free China.  I believe the village of Mau Ping was eventually re-established adjacent to Pak Kong Au. Until a decade ago, the Chairman of Saikung Rural Committee, the late Ho Wan-hei, was from Mau Ping.

The late Mr. LAU Wan-hei was a former Chairman of the Saikung Rural Committee. He was from Pak Kong Au, down the hill from Mau Ping. The Mau Ping New Village near Pak Kong Au was probably a private initiative, not a government programme. The old village was too far from Sai Kung Market. The villagers made their move when their relatives started sending money home from the UK in the 1960's.
