Hulda Noahrina Ashworth or "Rene" Knipp was born on 8 April 1892 in Natuk, Rhode Island and the wife of Professor Arthur Russell Knipp who taught at Lingnan University in Canton (Guangzhou). They had a daughter named Margaret who was born in Canton.
After the fall of Hong Kong, the family was interned at Stanley Camp. They were later released and returned to the United Sates in August 1942.
