Lily Franklin (nee Ashdown) was born in Hampstead, London on 12 January 1882 and died in Brighton, England on 22 February 1980.
She was married to Arthur Cawte Franklin who was formerly the Chief Government Analyst and for a while the Registrar of the University of Hong Kong and Lecturer in Chemistry. A. C. Franklin died in November 1933. He was a long-time resident of Cheung Chau and regarded by the villagers as "Father" of the island. He was also one of the founders of the Cheung Chau Residents' Association.
In 1938, Lily Franklin was listed as a resident of European House #21, Cheung Chau. Prior to the Japanese invasion, she was the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Cheung Chau Residents' Association.
She was an old friend of fellow Cheung Chau resident, Chaloner Grenville Alabaster who was the Attorney General at the time. Mrs. Franklin was mentioned a few times in Alabaster's book "More than 1001 Days and Nights of Hong Kong Internment".
