The opening ceremony of Phase 1 of the MTR's Modified Initial System (Kwun Tong to Shek Kip Mei) was conducted at Shek Kip Mei Station on 30 September 1979, the day before the MTR line was opened to the public.

Sir Murray MacLehose and the official party boarded the "01 Special Train". The Governor later operated the controls to nudge the train through the red banner and commence the journey to Kwun Tong.
