Japanese 229th Regiment crossed border into Sha Tau Kok (8Dec41)

On 8 December 1941, the Japanese 23rd Army's 38th Division, including the 228th and 229th Infantry Regiments (along with the 230th Regiment), crossed the Shenzhen River from China into the British New Territories, launching the Battle of Hong Kong.

Date and Time: 8 December 1941, starting at dawn (around 08:00 hours), shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. 

  • 229th Regiment Route: East Flank, moved through the eastern sector via Sha Tau Kok and Ta Kwu Ling heading toward Tai Po, later crossing Tolo Harbour.
  • 230th Regiment Route: West Flank, made a large hook curving right to clear the Castle Peak Road and to strike at the vital point around the left flank of the Gin Drinkers Line.
  • 228th Regiment Route: Central, crossed the border at Lok Ma Chau and Lo Wu, advancing toward Lam Tsuen and Needle Hill to breach the Gin Drinkers' Line.
