Godowns
There looked to be a row of 3 godowns on the waterfront block between Smithfield and North Street. The reason I mention these is because there appears to be a significant open area between the front of the buildings and the main wall fronting Des Voeux Road. This gap can be discerned (I think) on the 1934 aerial images (hkmaps.hk) and is marked as "open yard" on the 1936.1 map, as well as shadows that could correspond to the buildings' gable ends. That would possibly make the road on the right of the image North Street.
It's just an initial guess looking at the limited information available.
Typhoon Damage
I found this article covering the typhoon story from the September 2, 1937 edition of The Hong Kong Telegraph. It mentioned about one particular godown (No.7 Godown) being damaged by the typhoon near Western Street. The 1936 map also reveals a row of 7 buildings near the junction of Des Voeux Road and Western Street. Wondering if they were referring to the same complex shown in the picture. The slightly sloping road section to the right may also resemble Western Street.
Re: Photo and Location
Thank you gentlemen for your inputs. Much appreciated.
I had a second look at the photograph and the following clues:
a) noticed the chinese character "Kong" as in Hong Kong on the building;
b) noted "MANUFACTORY LTD" and a letter preceding "MANUFACTORY". Looked liked the letter "R".
After a bit of googling, the Hong Kong Rubber Manufactory Ltd appeared to be a strong candidate for the name of the company. Further googling revealed the following sources:
and the photo below:
Looking at https://www.hkmaps.hk/viewer.html, it appears the location of the factory premises were on the "New Praya", Kennedy Town between Queen's Road West and Collinson Street.
What a great find! Hats off…
What a great find! Hats off to you for overcoming such a challenging feat! Riddle solved.
Factory
Nice find moddsey. Well done.
Edit: I notice the advert on page 22 of the newspaper says: Main Entrance Catchick Street. Did it extend that far up back then?
Catchick Street
On a side note, the façades of the buildings in this postcard do look very much like those shown in the advert.
Excellent detective work!…
Excellent detective work!
#Freddie: I think the newspaper article is referring to the Former West Point Godowns [????-????].
Kerosine Godowns
#Klaus: Thanks for clearing up the location for me.
Having studied the advert image once again, I found that the overall profile of the building looks quite similar to the Former Kerosine Godowns as mentioned in this post. There seems to be more window and gate openings in the 1937 factory picture. Maybe these features were added during the remodeling to accommodate extra human traffic and improve ventilation? Just a guess.
Here is the collage that I made from the cropped images of the photos submitted by David, moddsey and Herostratus. Do you think the factory moved in the same location as the former Kerosine Godowns by any chance? Another image of the godowns can also be found in this Industrial History of Hong Kong Group website, though it is captioned Standard Oil Company’s godown.
This 1932 map also indicates the location of the "New Praya", which is a block north of Catchick Street.
Review of Latest Information
Thank you gentlemen for the heads-up and necessitating a review.
Now that an address of 8, New Praya Kennedy Town has been unearthed, the Hong Kong Rubber Manufactory Ltd was located at the former Kerosine Godowns, Kennedy Town
1938 Street Index (see here) confirms the location and presence of Hong Kong Rubber Manufactory Ltd at the address.
I think, given the presence of the tramline, the main photo shows the view of Catchick Street at the junction with Davis Street.
location
Nice find Freddie. The combination of the style, New Praya address and Catchik Street entrance as well as the existence of the Chinese characters under the gable windows made it look very likely. Good spot.
