An exercise of the Hong Kong Singapore Royal Artillery took place in the 1930s shows the Indian gunners assembling a 3.7-inch mountain gun, which can be assembled in minutes, haulted by the mules.but during the battle of Hong Kong the unit lost most of its pack animals and thus its mobility.
In December 1941 it had the 1st and 2nd Mountain Batteries, 3rd, 4th, and 25th Medium Batteries, 26th Coast Battery, and 17th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battery, all of the batteries were mobile.
The garrison had a number of prepared positions for the HKSRA in the New Territories, Kowloon, and Hong Kong. When the Japanese forces landed on the Island the unit lost almost half of its guns along Stanley Gap.
