Ligoniel and The Farm - RBL 101 (Garden) in 1968

Ligoniel and The Farm - RBL 101 (Garden) 1968

Me and my brother play soccer on the Ligoniel and The Farm - RBL 101’s garden in 1968, the only house along Findlay Path, after WW2, the house was looted and all floors were empty with scattered house ware everywhere except the underground cellar, a chinese family of 6 or more were living there, not sure who they are.   At the time we did not know the history of the building - the Governor Henry May and then Mr. Alexander Findlay Smith, only knew the garden was wild open for soccer game.  It was torn down now you can still see the garden there now.

Thank you for the personal story of that place.

Long have I wondered how that building was used later, say in the late-1960's, since I came across with that full photo you shared above. It seemed some children was wearing pajamas with same stripe-pattern. Any clues that it was once used as a sanatorium / hostel etc? Thanks.

I've removed Francis Henry MAY and Alexander Findlay SMITH from the 'Shows person / people'. On Gwulo we use that for people who can actually be seen in the photo.

Thanks for sharing your memories of this site, they help bring the old photos to life.

The house was deserted for a long time and torned down in the 80s, after it was sold.   Between 1963 to 1969, I play soccer there very often, with my brother and with those kids lived in the celler or from the surrounding.  The garden was well known to the kids lived off the Barker Road and the Peak as a soccer field.   I do not think the house was used as a sanatorium or hostel, at the time we did not understand why the family lived in the celler, and what sort of role they carried.  It was not appeared to us they were the care taker, or security staff employed by the owner.
