European House 11, Cheung Chau, roof.

This is the roof of the cottage next to House #11 and it gives a good idea of the water collecting design of these flat-roofed houses.  This water was collected in a cistern and piped for use in washing and toilet flushing, while drinking water had to be fetched by hand from island wells prior to 1955.  Bill Ream talks of Chinese labour from the mainland doing this.
