N.B. The date on the photo is written using the Republic of China calendar, in which 1912 is the first year. Thus, 36-1-26 is the 26th of January in the 36th year of the Republic, i.e. 1947.
The house at 11 Suffolk Road underwent several alterations between 1941 and 1947. The first floor was extended forwards to align with the protruding ground floor verandah that had been added sometime around 1940, and the original hip roof was replaced with a flat roof. The vertical iron bars spanning the bays from 1940 (before the verandah extension) were also replaced with a more intricate, geometric style. Most notably, most of the lush greenery in the garden disappeared, possibly due to neglect during the Japanese occupation. Compare with 1940 images here and here.
