From at least 1940 through to about 1960, the property at 11 Suffolk Road comprised the main house, with an enclosed verandah added to the front some time around 1940; a second, two-storey building behind it that housed the chauffeur and his family; and a long, low building to the back left that served as accommodation for the various mui tsai that served the owner's family. The front garden included a pavilion in the left corner. As a result of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1941, the whole family retreated back to Guangzhou, and did not return to HK until 1946-7, after which the garden was re-landscaped to cover up the damage from the war years.
Source: recollections of the owner's grandchildren, who lived in and then later regularly visited this house from the late 1940s through to about 1960.
