1842 - Chek Chue as described by a 'Canton Press' reporter

This extract from the January 1842 edition of the Canton Press is reproduced in: Sayer, G.R., Hong Kong 1841-1862 – Birth, Adolescence and Coming of Age, Hong Kong University Press, Hong Kong 1980.

The mention of an extensive rope-walk - a rope-walk being that long piece of ground on which rope is twisted - would tend to suggest a sizeable rope making enterprise in the village (township) of Chek Chue; the raw material for this local industry possibly being grown on nearby Wong Ma Kok 黃麻角 (Yellow Hemp Point) – just an idle thought though.
