On the back my grandfather writes: "This is quite a typical street scene and quite near the centre of town. Notice the poles of the coolie women and the chairs and rickshaws. The chairs are used to climb the steep streets by lazy people."

On the left, the sign reads Mee Fong Studio, High Class Photographer. He had his studio at No. 7 Wyndham Street.
The scaffolding at the rear encasing the tall building is likely the construction of the China Building (1st generation) [1924_1975]. This photo is probably mid-late 1923.

Yes, September 1923 would be the correct month and year.
The advertisement for the Star Theatre's film presentation has been ripped apart revealing a previous advertisement for the screening of "The Flirt" at the World Theatre. That film was shown during 12-15 September.
At the Theatre Royal (City Hall), the Forbes Russell Comedy Company with Miss Niqua Lewis was presenting their successful West End shows on the following days:
