1959 - Hughes & Maugham together in Japan

This image of genial Australian journalist, Dick Hughes, and celebrated British author, Somerset Maugham (1874 –1965), watching a martial arts demonstration together in Japan, is a grab taken from a photograph that appears in Norman Macswan’s biography of Hughes titled: The Man Who Read the East Wind (1982).

The two friends also had lunch together at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. During the course of their conversations, Hughes had suggested that Maugham might consult an oriental fortune teller while making his “sayonara tour” of the Far East. According to Hughes, Maugham had shrugged and replied: It is bad enough to know the past; it would be intolerable to know the future.
