This engaging image appears on the dust jacket of The Man Who Read the East Wind (1982). The author, Norman Macswan, writes: “The back of the jacket shows Hughes and author Ian Fleming in Kyoto during Fleming’s tour of Japan to research one of his James Bond Novels You Only Live Twice (1964). Hughes said of the picture: Fleming and myself in spiritual converse after early morning mass.
Hughes makes an appearance in Fleming’s novel in the character of Australian secret agent, Dikko Henderson, who is rather fittingly described as having: a craggy, sympathetic face, rather stony blue eyes, and a badly broken nose.
