1953 - Tiger Balm Garden

This early 1950’s image, captured by the authors, appears in Stericker, John & Veronica, The Hong Kong Gift Book, Self-published, Hong Kong 1954. The authors write: In the Tiger Balm Garden – This famous garden, in which many Chinese legends and fairytales are depicted in model and relief, combines gaudiness with interest. Through the generosity of two philanthropic brothers, Aw Boon Par 胡文虎 (1888 – 1944) and Aw Boon Haw 胡文虎 (1882 – 1954), the garden was thrown open to the public free of charge, and it has become a centre of interest both for residents and tourists. The public has come to associate it with the oriental panacea “Tiger Balm” on which the Aw fortunes were founded and which is symbolized by the realistic models of tigers in the garden. The late Mr Aw Boon Haw died in September 1954 having, during his lifetime, contributed millions of his fortune to charity. The modern concrete Pagoda is a graceful and striking monument, which attracts many visitors and photographers to the Tiger Balm Garden.
