Even when it comes to the sad day of his retirement Sir Alexander Grantham will merit a place in this book, just as he will for ever merit a place in Hong Kong’s history; his term of office having been longer than any of his predecessors may, in retrospect, be attributed not entirely to the natural desire of the British Government for him to remain but to the fact that the people of Hong Kong wanted him and needed him.
