Broadwood Road came into being in 1915.  Like the other colonial-style houses built along Broadwood Road at this time, either bungalows or two-storey villas, #12 was a bungalow.

There was a zig-zag path that led down to Broadwood Road half way down the picture, and for many years access anywhere would have been by sedan chair or rickshaw.  Broadwood Road was single track until at least the 1960s.

Because it was built on a ridge, the villa had superb views of the racecourse and the peaks around, and bungalows #11 and #12 were built to the front of the ridge to take full advantage  of these views.

Lau Chu-Pak, one of the pillars of early Hong Kong society, was the first owner of 12 Broadwood Road. He was founder, with Ho Fook, of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, of which he was later Chairman. There should really be a page for him on Gwulo as he held important public posts and was an energetic reformer. See his Wikipedia entry. Like Sir Ellis Kadoorie, Lau Chu-Pak also died in 1922.

12 Broadwood Road was in I.L. 2133.
