Here are the dates that HMS Tyne was in Asia (source: HMS Tyne - Summary of Service 1941-1972)

  • Early 1953: Left Malta on 19 Feb, sailing to Asia
  • 7 Apr 1953: Arrived Sasebo, Japan, relieving HMS Ladybird as the flagship of the Flag Officer, Second in Command, Far East Fleet, the naval commander of the United Nations forces operating in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of Korea
  • 3 Dec 1953: Left Sasebo for Hong Kong
  • March 1954: Maintenance at Singapore, then sailed to UK

Given the earlier photo of Mr Ho on HMS Ladybird, I guess this photo this was taken sometime between April and December 1953.

Many thanks for researching this information. I know the detail is not good but do you think the background is likely to be Japan rather than Hong Kong as I guess it could have been taken between Dec 1953 and Mar 1954 while HMS Tyne was in Hong Kong?
