mr matcham on mosaic tile

This is one of only two photos of the pony Mosaic Tile in the victory parade at Happy Valley Race Course. The occasion was the race meeting for the Prince of Wales on 7 April 1922. Thanks to the race reports I have been able to identify the jockey as George Matcham, who had only recently left the Shanghai Metropolitan Police to work at the Hong Kong stables. Matcham seems to have become a friend of my grandfather, Charles Warren as well as riding for his stable, the Tile Stable. Not all the jockeys who rode for my grandfather attended his funeral in June 1923, but Matcham did.
