On 1 April 1935, the Government allowed the China Motor Bus Co. to introduce second class fares on certain bus routes on Hong Kong Island. This introduction led to direct competition with the fares on tramcar routes in the city. A petition was made to the Secretary of State by Hong Kong Tramways but to no avail.

As a result, effective 1 June 1936, Hong Kong Tramways reduced fares on the Kennedy Town/Whitty Street tramcars and Causeway Bay/Happy Valley tramcars from 10 cents to 6 cents, and that for the second class from 5 cents to 3 cents.
