One of my family friends used to live there. The father was a locomotive engineer. Each family had their own individual unit, which consisted of a living room with high ceiling in the front, a bedroom, a low-ceiling loft above the bedroom, a kitchen and a washroom in the back, with a tiny open courtyard & a back door opening into the back lane alongside the railway. With windows in the front and the back for crosswinds, no A/C was needed.  It was small and kind of neat, much better than the living conditions of an average HKer at the time, as long as they could get used to the rumble of the trains every 30 min. or so.
