This photo originally appeared in an album owned by Dr. Wilhelm Sachs, a relative of mine, who was chief physician on board the Austro-Hungarian corvette SMS Erzherzog Friedrich during their circumnavigation of the globe from 1874 to 1876. The album is now held in the archives of the Austrian Military History Museum in Vienna.

Foremost, thanks to David for uploading the image :) !

I had to use the small image the museum sent me for uploading onto this site (although they for sure scanned it properly), and could not provide the image I've taken. It would show the details much better. But alas, I have to stick to the rules.

The "Friedrich", as the ship was called in short, touched Hongkong in August 1874 (10 days), and then again in January 1875 (all month, base for travels to Kanton and Macao) and for the last time in July 1875 (4 days). Presumably Wilhelm Sachs bought the Hongkong photographs during one of those stays, but he gives no information in his letters about the purchase of any of the photographs in his album.

regards Brigitte
