King's Honorary Nurse (K.H.N.) Title Established in 1949

In 1949, King George VI established the "King's Honorary Nursing Sister (K.H.N.S.)" title to recognize the contributions and dedication of nurses who served in the British Armed Forces. According to the official order announced by the Royal Family, Miss Olga Franklin became the first person to hold the King's Honorary Nursing Sister title. As a result of gender equality, this title has been renamed "King's/Queen's Honorary Nurse (K.H.N./Q.H.N.)"

  1. First person - 30 March 1949 : Head of the Royal Navy Nursing Service - Miss Olga Heather Franklin
  2. Second person - 31 March 1949 : Head of the Royal Air Force Nursing Service - Miss Dame Helen Wilson Cargill
  3. Third person - 1 April 1949 : Head of the Army Nursing Service - Miss Dame Anne Thomson
