- The 14th Asian Racing Conference, held in December 1978, was the first international event to take place in Hong Kong after the opening of the Sha Tin Racecourse on October 7th, 1978.
- After transitioning to a professional organization in 1971, The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club held its first-ever international event in the history of horse racing.
- A total of 11 countries or regions participated, including Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, India, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Additionally, 4 countries attended as observers, including Bahrain, Iran, the US and the United Kingdom.
- In celebration of the event, The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club hosted 10 trophy races, with each participating country contributing a trophy as the winning prize. The Australian Cup has been identified in the photo, while the locations of the remaining 9 trophies/cups remain a mystery.
* I purchased this Australian Cup from a Hong Kong antiques dealer. In November 2021, I donated it to the The Hong Kong Racing Museum.
