I think all the newspapers may have run this item as my cousin, Brian Lewis, pioneer in the research into our Hong Kong family history, picked it up from the SCMP, identically worded, and reproduced it in his 1992 document. He searched in vain for a report of the cited Chinese Chamber of Commerce purchase, which never happened. Decades later, in Hong Kong, I was able to access the purchase and sale history of 30-32 Des Voeux Road. For the above transaction, the indenture of sale is actually dated 2nd July 1921. The purchaser was Kan Hung-chiu, the tobacco magnate. The purchase price was $127,000. C.E. Warren & Co. Ltd. had owned the building since the end of WW1, when the company bought it from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, having been their tenants for many years.
